still nothing resolved. We may get a flight tomorrow, but United seems to be at the bottom of the food chain. And every piece of advice is contradictory: ‘you could go to Washington, then Zurich’… ‘Aberdeen is open’… ‘Try Madrid’… ‘Madrid is at capacity’… ‘No boats’… ‘Stay where you are, it’s better than Chicago, better than New York. They’re all sleeping at the airport’… The Ballard scenario is certainly in place. I found a useful book on Hitchcock’s San Francisco. And I’m beginning to think I’m stuck in it…

we’re ok; booked back into our Holiday Inn, which is presently occupied by a hard-core, jar-head lesbian convention. The Xtian fundamentalists, who greeted the world so loudly, have moved on. The sun shines on panhandlers and courteous street people with shopping trolleys filled with city salvage. We’ll do some more walks and trawl for information. I’d like to find a boat…

after an interesting time in Austin, feeling posthumous looking at old manuscripts, dirt from Stratford labouring days falling out of ancient notebooks, delivering talks, and leading an expedition up the Texas University Tower (memories of the 60ies sniper), we took ourselves to San Francisco. Where, thanks to the Icelandic volcano, we remain – with no immediate prospect of escape. A strange limbo of sunshine, walks, boat trips across to Oakland. Hackney becomes itself, most felt in this absence. Who knows when we’ll get back: with no compensation from United, or anybody, it’s an expensive holding exercise.
