Walking the landscape: a conversation with Iain Sinclair

Much of Iain Sinclair’s writing and film-making is inextricably linked with London, walking and history.

At this event, Iain Sinclair and Christopher Riopelle, Curator of Post-1800 Paintings, will discuss how artists and writers, such as Balke and Sinclair have been, and continue to be, affected by the places in which they find themselves.

HIS STORY: A NIGHT OF WORDS AND IMAGES WITH DAVE MCKEAN AND IAIN SINCLAIR

A benefit event for the Horse Hospital Fundraising Campaign

His Story 1

Dave McKean is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans comics, illustration, animation, film-directing, installation, music and performance.
He is a long-standing collaborator of author Neil Gaiman on cult works such as Sandman, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Coraline, and has designed album covers, books and posters from everyone from Richard Dawkins to Tori Amos, from the Rolling Stones to John Cale.
He is also a prolific filmmaker and his work with moving images echoes his illustrations with a heady collage of 2D and 3D, live narration and dreamlike journeys through impossible landscapes of the imagination.

Iain Sinclair is “a british writer, documentarist, film maker, poet, flaneur, metropolitan prophet and urban shaman, keeper of lost cultures and futurologist”.
His recent works center around psychogeographical explorations of London from a variety of different angles, from Hackney’s history to the Olympic debacle, from the London Orbital to the resurrected Overground route. His work exposes the sediment of all the visible and less visible stories, histories and culture that have accumulated in the city through time, creating a continuity through the charmed act of storytelling.

Dave and Iain will meet at the Horse Hospital for one very special night of communal storytelling, exploring their friendship, their own individual journeys so far and those stories that have brought them to cross paths along the way.

Featuring moving image and live narration.

Ghosts of a Ghost: William Burroughs, time surgery and the death of the image

From the Photographer’s Gallery website

“In this video, recorded at The Photographers’ Gallery to accompany our exhibition of photographs by William S. Burroughs, Iain Sinclair presents a fragmentary consideration of the interplay of photography, sound recording, manipulated autobiography, interview and anecdote in the work of Burroughs.”

American Smoke

Take a literary journey across America with influential writer and psychogeographer, Iain Sinclair. The acclaimed author of Ghost Milk, Hackney, that Rose-Red Empire, London Orbital and Lights Out for the Territory, Iain turns his focus on the compelling, memory-filled landscapes of the American Beats and their fellow travellers in his forthcoming book American Smoke. Chronicling his epic walk in the footsteps of Kerouac, Burroughs, Snyder, Olson and Lowry, it is enlivened by false memories, broken reports, obsessions with the Old West and strange adventures.
