There is a nice letter in the new issue of ‘Sight & Sound’ about the piece I did on Fritz Lang’s ‘M’.

This is the letter from Rajko Radovic of Toronto.

‘One does not read Iain Sinclair’s ‘M: Murder in the City’ (Sight & Sound, April 2010), one watches it like a just uncovered underground feature. At the end of every line is a cinematic cue after which comes a new moving image. And it all plays like a well documented dream sequence. Projected against the deliciously weird black hangings of a film essay, it turns the casual reader into a screening device for the mind’s eye’s pleasure.
I would just hope that there is yet a visionary producer left afloat on top of that toxic shroud we call the British film industry who would lock Mr Sinclair in what’s left of Pinewood Studios and give him free rein to turn ‘M: Murder in the city’ into some kind of delirium inducing political punk thriller with big bucks.’

‘Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire’ shortlisted for the Ondaatje Prize

‘Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire’ has been shortlisted for the Ondaatje Prize, which will be announced at a dinner on Monday, May 24.
My Athens piece, ‘The Calossus of Maroussi’, has been published in the current issue of the London Review of Books (27 May). I’ll let you have 2 extracts that were cut from the essay, for the website.

The swan pedalo

I’ve been out, doing a series of walks with Andrew Kötting, as preparation for a proposed voyage, on swan pedalo, from Hastings to the Olympic site, by sea, river, canal. A book of some kind, and an exhibition, are being assembled.

We’re back, got the first flight out of San Francisco at lunchtime on Wednesday… now trying to clear backlog of post, phone calls, missed deadlines. I have to give a talk tomorrow at the Univ. of Surrey.

Ben,

still nothing resolved. We may get a flight tomorrow, but United seems to be at the bottom of the food chain. And every piece of advice is contradictory: ‘you could go to Washington, then Zurich’… ‘Aberdeen is open’… ‘Try Madrid’… ‘Madrid is at capacity’… ‘No boats’… ‘Stay where you are, it’s better than Chicago, better than New York. They’re all sleeping at the airport’… The Ballard scenario is certainly in place. I found a useful book on Hitchcock’s San Francisco. And I’m beginning to think I’m stuck in it…
